Background:
The Bengali term technology or engineering comes from the English word engineering. About two and a half hundred years ago, technology spread worldwide with the help of the European Industrial Revolution. The significance of science got an opportunity to be used for the welfare of the common people through technical education.
Technical education was first introduced in Bangladesh in the forties and fifties. At that time, a diploma engineering course was introduced in the capital Dhaka alone in the whole country to produce middle-class engineers. Ahsan Ullah Engineering College (now BUET) was established for the degree engineering course at that time. Ahsan Ullah Engineering College offered a 4-year diploma engineering course in civil engineering along with the degree engineering course. The diploma-in-engineering curriculum was started with the establishment of the Bangladesh Institute of Glass and Ceramics in Tejgaon, Dhaka in 1951 and the Dhaka Polytechnic Institute in 1955. In the last half century, many branches of technical education and administration have expanded.
The Directorate of Technical Education under the Technical and Madrasa Education Division of the Ministry of Education of the Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh has been playing a special role in building Bangabandhu's Sonar Bangla. The journey of this institution began on March 11, 1951 with the aim of creating skilled human resources through the expansion and improvement of technical education. The total number of educational institutions under the Directorate is 190. The number of private polytechnics is about 485.
"One goal, be skilled" is the theme of the Technical Education Board, keeping in mind this issue. At present, there are 49 government polytechnic institutes in the country, 03 monotechnic institutes. Since 2004, teaching activities have started in 49 polytechnic institutes in the first and second shifts in phases.
The process of establishing 4 women's polytechnics (first in Dhaka and later in Chittagong, Khulna, Rajshahi) and currently 4 women's polytechnic institutes in Mymensingh, Rangpur, Sylhet and Barisal divisions to expand women's education in the Diploma-in-Engineering course is underway at a rapid pace. Out of a total of 872,658 students in technical and vocational education across the country, the number of girls is about 288,870. This information has been given in the government's gender budget report. However, the target of enrolling 2 million students in technical education by 2020 has been achieved. To further accelerate this goal, the Bangladesh government has undertaken a program to encourage students in various ways. Adequate training is being provided to teachers both in the country and abroad.
The main functions of the Directorate of Technical Education are 4 - human resource management, management of development activities, supervision of academic activities and creating links with domestic and international organizations related to technical education. Teaching activities are conducted at 3 levels in educational institutions under the department. Namely, certificate, diploma and degree level, there are 134 technical schools and colleges, 1 vocational teachers training college and 4 engineering colleges at the certificate level. The Directorate of Technical Education is located at F-4/B Sher-e-Banglanagar, Administrative Area, Agargaon, Dhaka-1207.
History:
The institution was established on March 11, 1951 under the name "East Bengal Ceramics Institute", later the name of this institution was changed several times. In 1960, it was renamed as "East Pakistan Institute of Glass and Ceramics" and after the separation of Bangladesh from Pakistan in 1971, it was changed again in 1972, and is currently operating under the name "Bangladesh Institute of Glass and Ceramics".
At present, this institution has 2 technology and 1 non-tech departments in 2 shifts of 4 years duration.
Education System:
In 1978, this institution, following the curriculum of Oklahoma State University in America, offered a three-year diploma level program in ceramic engineering, which was certified as Associate in Engineering. In 2000, the “Diploma in Glass Engineering” program was launched. Again, from 2000, the duration of the “Diploma in Glass and Ceramics” engineering was changed to four years. In addition to engineering education, there is a non-technical education department for teaching compulsory subjects such as Bengali, English, higher mathematics, physics, chemistry, business education, social science, physical education, etc. to the students of each department.
